THE VICE GUIDE TO CONGO: SEEING THE UNSEEN

Cell phones, computers, missiles and satellites are some of the things that need coltan. Considering that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has 85% of the resources of this mineral, we owe a lot to this country.

Or putting it in another way, without the DRC´s riches we would not have all of the electronic gadgets that keep us from dying of boredom. Yet these treasures are more of a curse than a blessing for the congolese. That´s the saddest part.

Man´s addiction to power and greediness gets in the way and we screw everything up. This mineral must be gotten at the cheapest price possible. In order to do that we shipped them bullets and we end up with their blood stained stones. We should never forget that for each cell phone call that we make, we really are choking up to death a congolese child.

The Vice team has taken the pains to show us what´s behind the story of the congolese minerals that support the high technology society that we are very fond of. Let´s travel to the deep jungles of Congo with them:
