Nobody knows the exact figure. But it is believed that more than 40 million American Bison (Bison bison) once roamed the vast prairies of North America.
Bisons were the primordial source of survival for the "indians" and these people took what they needed. This is true.
But somehow, with the help of the Hollywood movies and the biased press, we have gotten the idyllic impression that these aborigines were sound conservationists. This is further from the truth. Humans as a whole are fucking Nature destroyers.
In the long distance past, their ancestors, the Palaeoindians, were known to stampede bison herds and drive them into cliffs and killed them by the thousands.
Nevertheless, things were ecologically stable at the time of the Europeans arrival to the New World.
And when the fucking white man invaded the prairies, before you knew there were only a few hundred bisons left out of the millions.
With the help of invention of the "iron horse" (the train) and the rifle, hunters send millions of bisons to hell.
A hunter could spend months at a time in the bush killing bison, around 50 a day. One dollar per head, which was a lot of money then, turned into 50 bucks a day. So hundreds of men joined the crowd of hunters shooting bison.
The hunters took only the skin, leaving the carcass to rot on the ground. You could literally walk for miles over the bison cadavers piled and scattered left behind by these ruthless, rough and stupid hunters. Some of these people were damn criminals!!
In this brutal drama, there was a man who worried about the pending extinction of the bisons. He was one of the first white conservationists, albeit with a streak of businessman, in the history of the United States.
This man set about gathering several "buffalo" herds, lassoing the remaining wild animals or buying them.
In the end, he even managed to introduce a buffalo herd into the Yellowstone National Park. President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him as this park´s first game warden in 1902.
His name Charles Jesse Jones, better known as Buffalo Jones (1844-1919). He is considered one of the "preservers of the American bison".
And the following movie (Video 1) is based in part on Buffalo Jones, at least as far as this man´s inspiration to save the bison is concerned. It is a hell of a movie, anyway. Indeed! Especially at the end, when the bison tramples over and fucks up the fucking buffalo hunter that wanted to kill Buffalo Jones´ buffalo to get its skin. Here it is:
