Around the country, the state of our roads is causing outrage. Years of
under-investment, heavy traffic and bad weather have brought the situation to a
head and the public are fed up with excuses. From pothole victims to council
staff and campaigners, this documentary talks to the people who are trying to
stop Britain from going to pot! With potholes costing the British public an
estimated £370 million annually, it is not surprising that they have become a
national obsession. They cause accidents, injuries and occasionally claim lives,
so why is mending them not given greater priority? Those responsible for fixing
potholes explain the difficulties, which are not simply a matter of expense or
logistics. Heavy traffic can eradicate a simple patch in a matter of days,
exceptionally cold or dry weather often brings a fresh spate of potholes, and no
one likes the disruption to traffic while the work is being carried out.
