RAN’s report, The Truth Behind Tasmanian Forest Destruction and the Japanese Paper Industry, details how Gunns’ egregious logging practices are supported by major paper companies in Japan such as Nippon and Oji, who buy huge volumes of woodchips from Tasmania’s old growth and high conservation value forests (HCVF).
The report outlines the problems with Gunns’ logging in Tasmania, including:
- Massive clearing of native forests
- Routine logging of old growth and HCVF
- Serious problems with forestry regulation
- The inadequacy of the Australian Forestry Standard
It identifies the major buyers of Gunns’ woodchips in Japan—namely Nippon, Oji, and Chu-etsu—and the clients that buy from them, and then ranks the companies according to their impact upon Tasmania’s forest and their efforts to improve the problems.
It is being released in response to consistent false claims that have been made by Gunns and Australian forestry officials about the logging in Tasmania to both Japanese customers and the public at large – including that all old growth is protected in Tasmania! It is time to stop the logging industry’s masquerade - let the truth be known!
