LIFE OR DEATH IN A GLASS: CONTAMINANTS IN DRINKING WATER

Source: Wikipedia.

By G. von Hammer

Drinking water is a life necessity for humans. But at the same time, drinking water may also put an end to anyone´s living necessities. By this I mean that if you are drinking contaminated water, you may get ill or worse yet, become fodder of bacteria in the cemetery. Thus if you are dead, you won´t have any necessities anymore, will you?

It is a matter of life or death in a glass.

Why so?

Well, drinking water may be contaminated with dangerous microbes, radioactivity, organic matter, pesticides, herbicides, industrialpollutants, residues of excreted drugs and antibiotics, toxic chemicals from wear and tear of vehicle parts and fluids, chemicals in everyday products, etc.

For example, the presence of nitrate in drinking water can undermine our health. According to  Ward & Brender (2019), it increases the chances of getting cancer (brain, esophagus, stomach, kidney, bladder, pancreas, thyroid, breast, ovary, colorectal), affects the reproductive health, alters the thyroid gland, makes us more susceptible to diabetes, etc. Ingestion of nitrate by infants may lead to methemoglobinemia (blue baby syndrome). Pregnant women whose drinking water contains nitrate may have children with nervous system defects.

Where does nitrate come from?

It comes from different sources: Industrial fertilizersin agriculture, use of waste from water treatment plants as organic fertilizers, manure from animal concentration camps or CAFOs (commercial animal feeding operations), human dung in septic tanks, precipitation of air pollutants, waste from coffee processing, residual water from sugar industry, discharge of wastewater, etc.

The following video will give more information on the contaminants in drinking water.
