BLOODY START TO NEW YEAR WITH BOTH RHINO AND POACHER LIVES LOST

The New Year is off to a grisly start with two suspected poachers killed in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, one day after eight adult rhinos were found dead and de-horned.

During an anti-poaching operation, SA National Parks spokesman Reynold Thakhuli said, two alleged poachers were slain in a shoot-out with rangers. The pair was from neighboring Mozambique, and in possession of hunting equipment and a .375 rifle.

Rhinos once roamed Africa in great numbers but in the last century were hunted to near extinction, with the exception of protected areas like Kruger. But more than half of last year’s record rhino slayings took place within the renowned nature park. Prompted by this recent slaughter, SA Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa committed an additional 150 anti-poaching rangers to a force already 500-strong.

The World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) revealed a total of 448 rhinos were lost to poaching in SA last year; up from 333 in 2010. Killed exclusively for the perceived medicinal value and status of their horns, that number included 19 critically endangered black rhinos and 429 white rhinos. SA is home to roughly 80 percent of the world’s remaining rhino population, and conservationists are concerned that if the plunder continues to escalate at this rate, the species will fail to rebound.

 

Wide-ranging Measures


Park and law enforcement officials are taking wide-ranging measures to halt the killings. Aggressive efforts pushed related arrests to 232 last year, as compared to 165 in 2010; and sentences for poachers and smugglers were increased. But many of the villains come from impoverished Mozambique: lured by organized crime and the big price tag a rhino horn can demand – upwards of US $250,000.

Another bid would see the reconstruction of a 93-mile (150km), US $250-million electrified fence along the shared border, which would hopefully deter poaching and smuggling. Minister Molewa said further meetings were planned with Mozambican officials, with SA authorities calling for an “appropriate organized response” between the nations.

And Minister Molewa also appealed to Vietnam and China to educate their people regarding wildlife trafficking and the plight of rhinos. A bilateral treaty between SA and Vietnam, designed to ramp up cooperative law enforcement efforts, was negotiated in September 2011 but has yet to be signed.

SCIENTISTS DEVELOP RICE THAT REQUIRES NO COOKING

Indian scientists claim to have developed a rice variety that requires no cooking, only soaking in water.



The rice variety developed at the government-run Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI) at Cuttack in Orissa is characterized by low amylase content and becomes soft on soaking in water, institute director Tapan Kumar Adhya said in an interview.

Production of rice in India is extensive and last year’s production figure stands at 98.5 million tonnes. The present variety, he said, can serve specific niche consumers and make rice cooking a hassle-free affair.

The new variety, named Aghanibora, tested by the institute is of 145 days duration with a yield of 4-4.5 tonnes per hectare and is at par with the currently grown rice varieties in the country, he said.

“One can get ready to eat rice after soaking it for about 45 minutes in ordinary water, and 15 minutes if soaked in lukewarm water, whereas other rice varieties need cooking,” Mr. Adhya said.

The rice is a local, improved land variety of Assam under the ‘Komal chawl’ category and is not genetically modified rice. It is like any other rice variety grown and consumed in India.

“However, this variety is usually prepared as parboiled rice and then it can be used for consumption after milling,” the researcher said.

The initial experimentation was to test whether the rice variety could be grown in the hot and humid climate of Orissa and still retain the property of softness.

Scientists at the institute have done extensive research over the past three years and tested its nutritional properties and other biochemical parameters, he said.

“We are glad that our experiment has proved successful, and from our knowledge we believe it could be grown in the eastern states of India,” he said.

“The present rice variety is an already released variety and can be taken up by the farmers with the availability of the seeds,” Mr. Adhya said.

According to the institute director, the rice variety can be grown in all the eastern states of Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa and coastal Andhra Pradesh. “As such there is no technical barrier in cultivating it in any part of the country,” he said.

“We do not have knowledge of any other country developing such rice variety as rice is a cereal with huge diversity.

“We do not have specific data about the average household requirement of fuel. But this variety of rice will help in saving fuel, at least for cooking of rice. Moreover, it will be a relief to housewives,” he said.

8 WILD PROPOSALS TO RELOCATE ENDANGERED SPECIES

  • Moving big animals to places they don't already live is at once appealing and disturbing, a sort of adolescent environmental fantasy come to life: African lions in Nebraska! Komodo dragons in Australia!

    But at the beginning of the 21st century, with 7 billion humans competing for space and resources on a rapidly warming planet, exercising arguable control over the fate of nature, moving species around is a legitimate option.

    It's called assisted migration. Often the goal is to save endangered plants and animals, though not always. Sometimes, as with the Komodo dragon proposal, the goal is to restore ecological balance, and other proposals are motivated by an almost romantic sense of possibility: Wouldn't it be marvelous to watch cheetahs dash across the grasslands of South Dakota?

    As an idea, assisted migration has been around for decades, but since the millennium's turn it's moved from a mostly fringe concept to something that scientists discuss, if not argue. After all, many examples of unwittingly assisted migration show what can happen when relocation goes wrong: Cane toads swarming across Australia, brown tree snakes devouring Guam's birds, kudzu swallowing much of the southeastern United States, and of course the voracious Burmese pythons of Florida.

    On the flip side, however, are pheasants and sweet clover, brown trout and Norway maple, which despite their non-native origins are now considered a natural part of North American life. Sometimes relocation works fine, and an argument can be made that consciously acting as landscape-scale zookeepers and gardeners is a legitimate response to impending catastrophe.

    Komodo Dragons to Australia?


    In a Feb. 1 Nature paper, biologist David Bowman of Australia's University of Tasmania raises the hypothetical possibility of introducing elephants and Komodo dragons to Australia. At first it sounds mad, but what's happening now in Australia is a form of madness, too. Massive wildfires that have become a regular and lethal fact of Australian life don't only represent climate change or natural susceptibility, but the buildup of vegetation that until 50,000 years ago would have been eaten by Australia's now-extinct megafauna.

    Elephants could fill that role again, writes Bowman. "The idea of introducing elephants may seem absurd, but the only other methods likely to control gamba grass involve using chemicals or physically clearing the land, which would destroy the habitat," he writes. "Using mega-herbivores may ultimately be more practical and cost-effective." Komodo dragons wouldn't do much for fires, but they would eat feral pigs and buffalo, the targets of ongoing and largely unsuccessful animal control efforts.

    Only an eyeblink of evolutionary time separates the contemporary Great Plains from one resembling the savannas of Africa. It's not a perfect resemblance, but close enough that ecologists have considered "rewilding" the Great Plains with African mammals for decades.

    Whether they're visionaries or crackpots is a matter of opinion; for now, most people would probably pick the latter, though the idea's survival suggests a certain persistent appeal. And for one animal, at least, it's already reality: Herds of wild horses, their disposition a matter of ongoing controversy, last roamed the west some 13,000 years ago.

    Bringing big mammals to North America could provide a safe haven for the species, and might also bring the environment closer to what it was before the native megafauna went extinct.

    Given the resistance of ranchers to reintroduced wolves, it's hard to imagine lions ever roaming the Great Plains -- but what about cheetahs?

    Considered by Tim Flannery in his 2002 book The Eternal Frontier: An Ecological History of North America and Its Peoples, cheetah pose no threat to cattle, and are less dangerous to people than mountain lions.

    They could also be good for pronghorn antelope, the world's fastest hoof mammal, said science writer and environmental activist Connie Barlow. Pronghorns likely evolved to outrun a now-extinct species of North American cheetah, and "will surely slow down in a few more thousands of years if we do not return the cheetah," said Barlow.

    Saving Torreya taxifolia

    An evergreen conifer that moved south during the last Ice Age and was stranded when the glaciers retreated, Torreya taxifolia was until recently found only along one short stretch of Florida's Apalachicola river. In the mid-20th century they experienced a severe die back. Just 500 are left in that original habitat, and like American chestnut trees they no longer live long enough to reproduce.

    Between the disease and regional climate change, T. taxifolia's continued wild existence seemed unlikely. Then, early this millennium, a group of activists called the Torreya Guardians transplanted healthy seedlings cloned from botanical garden survivors into a few southern Appalachian locations.
     
    So far the transplants are healthy, and the Guardians intend for the trees to not only for the lineage to continue, but for T. taxifolia to again have an ecological role. The trees could have survived in gardens, in what are called "potted orchards" -- but "potted is the equivalent of caged," wrote Torreya Guardians founder Connie Barlow in 2004.

    At first, moving polar bears to Antarctica sounds reasonable. They're endangered. They like cold and ice. Even after global warming, Antarctica will have plenty of both.

    But one thing Antarctica doesn't have is large terrestrial predators, and animals there would be utterly unadapted. Transplanted polar bears would at first feast on penguins, but their defenseless populations would likely soon plummet, taking the bears down with them.

    Found just below the treeline in the mountains of western North America, whitebark pines have been decimated by beetles and fungal disease. Add temperatures rising faster than whitebarks can expand northward, and the situation is dire. In 2011 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declared that whitebark pine would probably go extinct without help.

    Help may be on the way, though. A large part of northwestern British Columbia should stay cool through the 21st century, and a few pines are disease resistant. Preliminary tests suggest that transplanted seedlings will do just fine.

    In 2007, billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson bought the Caribbean island of Moskito for $19 million, pledging to turn it into a luxury eco-resort. Then, in classic Branson form, he announced a plan to populate the island with endangered lemurs relocated from Madagascar, where they're threatened with extinction.

    The ensuing controversy perfectly captured the tensions of assisted migration: Moving the lemurs might save them, but it could also wreck the island. "It could be a brilliant or terrible idea but we just don't know yet," said Penelope Bodry-Sanders, founder of the Lemur Conservation Foundation, to the Guardian.

    An early proponent of assisted migration was none other than Charles Darwin. While his best-known studies of giant tortoises involved Galapagos species that helped shape his theory of evolution, he also took an interest in unrelated giant tortoises found on islands in the Indian Ocean.

    In 1874, Darwin wrote the governor of Mauritius, warning that the tortoises had been hunted to near-extinction and would vanish unless survivors were taken from the Aldabra islands and used to found new populations. The governor heeded his advice, and their descendants can today be found on islands across the Indian Ocean.

    HSBC Y GOLDMAN SACHS GUARDABAN US$335 MILLONES DEL DINERO DE PETROLEO LIBIO

    Londres y Washington DC. HSBC y Goldman Sachs están entre los banqueros occidentales clave para el régimen del coronel Gaddafi, de acuerdo a un documento de 2010 que se filtró a Global Witness. El documento detalla el paradero de los ingresos petroleros del Estado. Sin embargo el pueblo libio no podía saber dónde estaba invertido o cuánto era, porque los bancos no tienen obligación de revelar los activos del Estado que poseen. Global Witness pide ahora nuevas leyes que exijan los bancos y fondos de inversión para divulgar todos los fondos estatales que administran.

    Global Witness pidió a ambos bancos que confirmen que tenían los fondos para la Autoridad de Inversiones de la estatal Libia, y si todavía los tienen. Ambos se negaron, con HSBC citando la confidencialidad del cliente. Muchos otros bancos y firmas financieras están listados como Societe Generale, UniCredit y la Arab Banking Corporation.

    SHEEP IN HUMAN CLOTHING – SCIENTISTS REVEAL OUR FLOCK MENTALITY

    Have you ever arrived somewhere and wondered how you got there? Scientists at the University of Leeds believe they may have found the answer.
    Their research suggests that humans flock like sheep and birds, subconsciously following a minority of individuals. The study at the University of Leeds shows that it takes a minority of just five per cent to influence a crowd's direction - and that the other 95 per cent follow without realising it.
    The findings could have major implications for directing the flow of large crowds, in particular in disaster scenarios, where verbal communication may be difficult. "There are many situations where this information could be used to good effect," says Professor Jens Krause of the University's Faculty of Biological Sciences. "At one extreme, it could be used to inform emergency planning strategies and at the other, it could be useful in organising pedestrian flow in busy areas."
    Professor Krause, with PhD student John Dyer, conducted a series of experiments where groups of people were asked to walk randomly around a large hall. Within the group, a select few received more detailed information about where to walk. Participants were not allowed to communicate with one another but had to stay within arms length of another person.
    The findings show that in all cases, the 'informed individuals' were followed by others in the crowd, forming a self-organising, snake-like structure. "We've all been in situations where we get swept along by the crowd," says Professor Krause. "But what's interesting about this research is that our participants ended up making a consensus decision despite the fact that they weren't allowed to talk or gesture to one another. In most cases the participants didn't realise they were being led by others."
    Other experiments in the study used groups of different sizes, with different ratios of 'informed individuals'. The research findings show that as the number of people in a crowd increases, the number of informed individuals decreases. In large crowds of 200 or more, five per cent of the group is enough to influence the direction in which it travels. The research also looked at different scenarios for the location of the 'informed individuals' to determine whether where they were located had a bearing on the time it took for the crowd to follow.
    "We initially started looking at consensus decision making in humans because we were interested in animal migration, particularly birds, where it can be difficult to identify the leaders of a flock," says Professor Krause. "But it just goes to show that there are strong parallels between animal grouping behaviour and human crowds."
    This research was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and was a collaborative study involving the Universities of Oxford and Wales Bangor. The paper relating to this research, entitled Consensus decision making in human crowds is published in the current issue of Animal Behaviour Journal.

    ESTUDIAN SERPIENTES PLANEADORAS PARA DESARROLLAR MICRO-AVIONES

    El Departamento de Defensa de los EEUU se encuentra entre los patrocinadores de un proyecto para investigar "serpientes planeadoras" del sudeste asiático para diseñar pequeños aeroplanos, reveló hoy el científico Jake Socha.

    "Parte del interés yace en el objetivo de fabricar micro-aeroplanos. Estudiamos a estas serpiente para comprender sus sofisticadas habilidades de planeo", dijo Socha en una entrevista con la NPR, la radio pública de EU.

    "Y ver si se pueden aplicar estos principios para desarrollar pequeños vehículos aéreos", agregó Socha, investigador de la Universidad Virginia Tech.

    Las serpientes estudiadas por Socha, pertenecientes al género Chrysopelea, pasan "de ser un cilindro a algo que planea" y logran desplazar en el aire varios centenares de metros saltando desde los árboles en los que habitan a más de 60 metros de altura.

    Los reptiles, según un vídeo divulgado por la National Geographic Sociey, primero se dejan caer para coger velocidad y, posteriormente, se aplanan hasta convertirse en una "sola y larga ala", en palabras de Soha.

    La Agencia de Proyectos de Investigación Avanzada de Defensa (DAPRA, por sus siglas en inglés) de EU, que se encuentra con la National Geographic Society entre los grupos que financian la investigación de Socha, está interesada en la "dinámica física del vuelo de las serpientes".

    Socha presentará los resultados de su estudio en la revista científica "Bioinspiration and Biomimetics".
