The fishing industry moves great quantities of money worldwide. According to the Nippon Foundation - Nereus Program, "the total global revenue from fishing is $90 billion per year, landed and sold".

Given that this industry smells of money a great deal, it is not surprising to find the organised crime getting its dirty hands into it to cash in as well.

As a matter of fact, "illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a huge global problem estimated to cost the global economy between 15 billion and 36 billion USD in direct losses annually", according to a recent report (Corruption in the fisheries sector: Import controls, transparency, and WWF practice) published by the World Wild Fund (2021).
